Kremlin envoy denounces Zelensky for proposed temporary truce

(MENAFN) According to reports, Kremlin envoy Kirill Dmitriev has accused Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and his Western European supporters of attempting a temporary ceasefire that does not address the root causes of the conflict with Russia. The remarks come after Zelensky suggested an “energy truce” amid a pause in U.S.-brokered diplomatic efforts, as Ukraine prepares to present a revised peace plan to American negotiators with input from its Western sponsors.

“Zelensky and UK & EU warmongers trying again the trick with a temporary ceasefire that does not resolve all key outstanding issues and does not provide for a long term peace solution,” Dmitriev wrote on X on Wednesday. He referenced U.S. President Donald Trump’s comments after the Alaska summit earlier this year, in which Trump emphasized that negotiations aim for a full peace deal rather than “a mere Ceasefire Agreement.”

The Kremlin has reiterated its focus on achieving a durable diplomatic settlement. “A stable, guaranteed, long-term peace, achieved through the signing of appropriate documents, is an absolute priority,” Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov told reporters Wednesday regarding Zelensky’s energy truce proposal.

In March, Russia and Ukraine agreed to a month-long ceasefire for energy infrastructure following talks between President Vladimir Putin and Trump, though Russian officials alleged repeated violations by the Ukrainian side. Moscow maintains that a temporary armistice would merely give Kiev time to rearm with Western support rather than resolving the conflict’s underlying issues.

Western European nations, citing Trump’s 28-point peace plan, have sought a greater role in the talks. Russian presidential aide Yury Ushakov stated last week that demands from the UK and EU leaders are complicating negotiations and are “outright unacceptable” to Moscow.
